There has been a lot of talk lately about digital transformation and innovative business approaches. What’s all this about?

  • Jakub Rumian: another industrial revolution is already underway. The current level of IT development makes it possible to support any enterprise and transfer existing processes, activities and decisions to the digital world. Thanks to this, it is possible to react better and faster to threats, changes and opportunities. The thing is, there is no one good recipe for digital transformation. You have to approach it wisely. The most important thing is to pay attention to the realities that characterize a specific enterprise. Then, taking actions that are not focused solely on selling your own services, but on solving the observed problems.

  • Tomasz Srebrny: exactly! The basis is understanding the company’s problems, collecting data, getting to know the internal environment and external conditions of the business.   • Filip Dziedzic: universalism is not always possible. One issue is the purchase of an e-mail program license and the other is a system supporting field workers. Does it make sense to build your own email program? Usually not. Will the ready-made solution for employees meet all requirements? The answer is similar. Example: energy industry, field service required. Problems: access to documentation and difficulties with communication. Solution: a dedicated mobile app that synchronizes offline data. Yes it’s true. Native mobile apps are much more secure against errors than hybrid apps. Why? If you need to keep two versions of an application (for different operating systems) in the same codebase, you are bound to run into many unforeseen difficulties. First, you are dependent on hybrid technologies that can reduce user comfort and slow down solution performance. Problems arise as new versions of the iOS and Android operating systems appear. If there is a new UI feature (and every time that happens) we have to wait for external tools to catch up.

In the case of native apps, the code is dedicated to only one platform. Such a high compatibility of the application and the operating system is a great help not only in the case of updating, but also in the ordinary use of the solution.

When should you opt for a native mobile app?

The native mobile app is a good solution for all organizations that want to increase the availability of their resources for customers and employees. Companies that provide services related to the servicing of devices, often scattered in different locations, also deserve special attention. If one of the basic needs is collecting information directly at the point of the event, then the native app will be an excellent choice. Thanks to it, you can report problems, report work and efficiently record measurements. It is important that these apps can run offline. All changes made when network access was restricted will automatically update as soon as Internet connection is restored. Dedicated native mobile apps will also prove themselves where we are dealing with processes related to inventory or record keeping.

However, this is not the end! It is worth considering the option of creating a new native application when the currently used mobile solutions do not work well enough, e.g. when:

  • only work online
  • they don’t have all the necessary functionalities
  • they run slow
  • they don’t support RFID / Barcode readers

Does this mean that native apps have only advantages? Of course not. The biggest objection to native apps in relation to hybrid applications is the need to support separate versions of the application depending on the platform. Due to this feature, native applications are less likely to find their way to B2C markets, where there is a high need for compatibility of the solution with a wide range of devices. However, when we focus on business apps, we often talk about the uniformity of hardware platforms. Regardless of the application, in our opinion, the advantages of native solutions may determine the final success related to their use.

What is Predictive Maintenance (PdM)?

The basic assumption of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is to monitor the health and performance of enterprise resources in real time in order to predict when the resources will require maintenance. Preventive maintenance is performed on a regular basis (e.g. monthly, annually) or based on wear on parts (after a certain number of cycles). There is always a predetermined schedule here, which in practice may lead to too many service activities on a given element, even if its technical condition does not require it at the moment. Predictive maintenance requires more advanced steps to perform much more precise service activities. Predictive Maintenance uses technology to assess when certain equipment requires maintenance.

PDM – technology in the service of business

Predictive Maintenance activities are based on the analysis of data collected thanks to advanced technologies. The basic element are machines monitoring the condition of machines, equipped with sensors that collect information about temperature, vibration, noise level, pressure, etc. It is possible to convert this information into digital signals that can be measured and analyzed at a specific time. All this to predict when a service technician’s intervention is required.
