The art of usability – IT for your business

IT for business – we present the content of an interview for Forbes Polska, 05/2022. The original material in Polish can be found here (page 7)

The real innovation makes the existing problems of entrepreneurs their competitive advantage. How does it look in practice? Representatives of Opsenio Sp. z o.o.

There has been a lot of talk lately about digital transformation and innovative business approaches. What’s all this about?

  • Jakub Rumian: another industrial revolution is already underway. The current level of IT development makes it possible to support any enterprise and transfer existing processes, activities and decisions to the digital world. Thanks to this, it is possible to react better and faster to threats, changes and opportunities. The thing is, there is no one good recipe for digital transformation. You have to approach it wisely. The most important thing is to pay attention to the realities that characterize a specific enterprise. Then, taking actions that are not focused solely on selling your own services, but on solving the observed problems.

So we’re talking about full software customization?

  • Tomasz Srebrny: exactly! The basis is understanding the company’s problems, collecting data, getting to know the internal environment and external conditions of the business. Not everyone is aware that the development of an enterprise with the use of IT is definitely more than just purchasing software. Focusing on solving problems allows you to create a unique scenario of project activities. The result is a solution tailored to your specific needs. And most importantly: over time, we always see a return on such an investment.

ROI topic appeared. How to wisely plan an investment in software?

  • Filip Dziedzic: universalism is not always possible. One issue is the purchase of an e-mail program license and the other is a system supporting field workers. Does it make sense to build your own email program? Usually not. Will the ready-made solution for employees meet all requirements? The answer is similar. Example: energy industry, field service required. Problems: access to documentation and difficulties with communication. Solution: a dedicated mobile app that synchronizes offline data. The instant reporting and access to data increased the productivity of teams by 20%. Such effects can be achieved when the created solution responds 100% to the problems. An individual approach is the basis for a reasonable planning of IT investments.

Sounds good, but does the same scheme always work?

  • Jakub Rumian: the biggest problem is shaping customer awareness. Some companies are well aware of the problems they are struggling with and expect specific solutions within the established budget. There are cases where someone has a brilliant idea for improvement in their head, but is not able to implement it themselves. Here, the approach of the design team requires more creativity. At Opsenio, we like such challenges a lot! The last group of clients feel that they are standing still and contact us with a request for a thorough analysis of the potential and suggesting solutions. Each of these cases requires a different course of action.

The biggest obstacle in solving such problems is?

  • Tomasz Srebrny: the most difficult thing is to change the way customers perceive problems. Many are convinced that success can only be achieved with a finished product, without unnecessarily getting involved in the creative process. This option is convenient, but it does’t allow you to achieve a real market advantage. Success doesn’t lie on the shelf – you have to work for it. Only the full involvement of the business and technology provider enables a successful digital transformation. The next steps are much easier.

A company that invests in dedicated software once wants more and more?

  • Filip Dziedzic: it is easier to conduct investments when real profits from already performed activities are noticed. Trust has to be earned. One mobile application usually entails another one: to operate a warehouse, tool room, breakdowns, etc. The financial industry often focuses on improving customer service. Dedicated software is the basis here. In this way, we build complaint management systems and facilitate integration with credit risk data. There are many examples. Eliminating problems is the key. This immediately translates into increased efficiency.

Key benefits of creating native mobile apps for businesses

Before we discuss the advantages of creating native mobile apps, it is worth describing in detail what these applications are. Well: native mobile apps are applications written from scratch for a specific mobile platform. They are created exactly for a specific operating system. At a time when mobile phones are an integral part of everyone’s life, the potential of mobile solutions should not be underestimated. More and more companies seem to notice the new opportunities brought by native mobile applications. Thanks to them, it is possible not only to contact customers immediately. Native mobile apps are becoming a business tool that facilitates the management of internal company processes. It is these solutions that quickly organize complex data sets that users have access to in real time. Thanks to the use of mobile applications in enterprises, decision-makers gain powerful analytical support, and employees receive reliable assistance in performing their current duties. Do you want to know if the discussed solution is for you? We invite you to read!

Native App Development Approach

Do you realize that designing and implementing a dedicated mobile apps is not just an option these days? Only such solutions will be 100% tailored to your company. The majority of representatives of each industry still use ready-made solutions available on the market. In order to distinguish your business and realistically improve the key processes of the company, you need to focus on solutions created from scratch. The project team, analyzing the possibilities and needs of a specific business, creates a solution for only one company. Thanks to this, the functionalities can be refined down to the smallest detail. All this to make the application work efficiently and effectively. Native mobile apps are therefore written in the programming language dedicated to the selected operating system, we are talking about:

  • Java, Kotlin – for native Android applications
  • Swift, Objective-C – for iOS

Characteristic features of native apps are:

  • top performance
  • the ability to use the potential already hidden in the mobile phone itself, e.g. camera, imaginer, RFID antennas or other peripherals. This definitely facilitates operations, especially for field employees who care about high ergonomics of the solution and quick communication with the company or colleagues.

In order for a native mobile app to provide your business with key benefits, you should start by choosing a specific platform.

The advantage = native mobile applications

Such a thesis is justified mainly because native mobile applications are known mostly for their reliability. And in any business, this feature is the basis and driving force for development.

Efficiency – yes!

Native mobile applications mean speed and efficiency. When you programming a solution dedicated to a specific operating system, you can fully use the potential of a given platform without the need to use universal adapters. This leads to a significant performance improvement. The time needed to load such an application is fast and all functionalities work smoothly. All because these applications use the maximum potential of the processing speed of the device.

Safety – that’s the key!

Native mobile apps are a guarantee of security. This is primarily about protection against any breach of security from the outside, as well as mechanisms that facilitate the protection of data by the user himself. In the case of native mobile apps, it is much easier (than in the case of hybrid applications) to use two-factor authentication. Solutions of this type use official API interfaces, which is why they are able to ensure a high level of security. Most importantly, these applications are independent of third-party software, eliminating potential security issues right from the start.

Stability – of course!

The support offered by the platforms: iOS and Android is also important. As a result, native mobile apps are much more stable in terms of use, maintenance and development. If you want to create a reliable solution that can be freely expanded, this approach is perfect for you.

Mobility – it’s so easy!

It is thanks to this that they are faster in the implementation of processes. Push notifications are an additional advantage. Better integration with mobile equipment saves time and makes it comfortable to use.

User comfort – the key point!

Since we are talking about the comfort of use, it is worth emphasizing that native mobile apps provide a very good UI and UX experience. Adapting to a specific platform makes them very intuitive and interactive. All graphics here retain their perfect appearance and quickly adapt to the specifics of a specific device. Resolution, size, high quality of graphics – these are the basic elements that speak in favor of the choice of native mobile apps.

Advantages of creating native mobile apps – less bugs, more independence

Yes it’s true. Native mobile apps are much more secure against errors than hybrid apps. Why? If you need to keep two versions of an application (for different operating systems) in the same codebase, you are bound to run into many unforeseen difficulties. First, you are dependent on hybrid technologies that can reduce user comfort and slow down solution performance. Problems arise as new versions of the iOS and Android operating systems appear. If there is a new UI feature (and every time that happens) we have to wait for external tools to catch up.

In the case of native apps, the code is dedicated to only one platform. Such a high compatibility of the application and the operating system is a great help not only in the case of updating, but also in the ordinary use of the solution.

When should you opt for a native mobile app?

The native mobile app is a good solution for all organizations that want to increase the availability of their resources for customers and employees. Companies that provide services related to the servicing of devices, often scattered in different locations, also deserve special attention. If one of the basic needs is collecting information directly at the point of the event, then the native app will be an excellent choice. Thanks to it, you can report problems, report work and efficiently record measurements. It is important that these apps can run offline. All changes made when network access was restricted will automatically update as soon as Internet connection is restored. Dedicated native mobile apps will also prove themselves where we are dealing with processes related to inventory or record keeping.

However, this is not the end! It is worth considering the option of creating a new native application when the currently used mobile solutions do not work well enough, e.g. when:

  • only work online
  • they don’t have all the necessary functionalities
  • they run slow
  • they don’t support RFID / Barcode readers

Does this mean that native apps have only advantages? Of course not. The biggest objection to native apps in relation to hybrid applications is the need to support separate versions of the application depending on the platform. Due to this feature, native applications are less likely to find their way to B2C markets, where there is a high need for compatibility of the solution with a wide range of devices. However, when we focus on business apps, we often talk about the uniformity of hardware platforms. Regardless of the application, in our opinion, the advantages of native solutions may determine the final success related to their use.

MRO Marketplace: control has never been so important

Have the Covid-19 pandemic and the unstable political situation in Europe affected the MRO market? Of course! The changes that have taken place in this area have one common denominator: increasing the effectiveness of maintenance management. It is possible only thanks to the control, data analysis and efficient management of the entrusted assets of the companies. How can this be done?

MRO – a higher level of management: inventory and delivery logistics

Efficient management of the company’s assets in the field of production and maintenance has always been a challenge. Keeping track of all the smallest parts, including large and expensive parts of engines or industrial machines, is a complicated process. Maintaining reliable inventory control and optimization of costs related to the procurement of parts are the basic elements on which, in the time of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflicts in Europe, the attention of many companies is focused. CONTROL is the only element that guarantees stabilization between the challenges of everyday life and the need to run a business effectively.

There are three main aspects to effective control in medium and large enterprises. It is about control:

  • stock status;
  • over people who have access to parts in the warehouse;
  • over the supply chain to ensure a constant supply of critical parts.

Especially in the times of chaos, which we observe now, many entrepreneurs realized how important it is to effectively manage warehouse management. Document flow automation is possible thanks to dedicated IT systems. Thanks to them, you can not only effectively manage information, but also have access to it in real time – everywhere and at any time. Sounds good? But that’s not all!

Opsenio: oprogramowanie dedykowane

Supply chain planning: medium and large enterprises

In order to optimally use the company’s potential, it must be possible for its uninterrupted operation. That is why nowadays it is so important to ensure the efficient execution of orders for parts necessary for maintenance departments. When it comes to supply chains, midsize and large companies are now much better placed to schedule orders to ensure deliveries are in the right size and on time. It should be remembered that accumulating too large stocks of parts generates a significant financial burden. Therefore, rational planning of expenses becomes a priority.

The trend that can be noticed not only in Poland but also around the world is simple: only a reliable data analysis can optimize the delivery planning process. More often than before the pandemic, companies collect information about what parts they have, how often they are used, and when and where they must obtain them. Only knowing the exact figures can optimize not only the process of planning the supply chain, but also the expenses that the company incurs for this purpose. The MRO market is currently experiencing its heyday mainly because access to new parts is becoming more and more difficult.

MRO market: control and long-term thinking

During the Covid-19 era, supply times have increased significantly. Before the pandemic, new orders for basic parts were delivered within 24 hours. A delivery lasting no longer than 2 days has become a standard. At present, the situation is not that good and deliveries are taking longer and longer. The unstable situation in Europe and the new sanction packages require many companies to revise their existing development and optimization strategies as soon as possible. This is a significant threat to business, especially when it comes to obtaining critical spare parts. This is why affairs and supply chain professionals need to think long term.

Planning should take into account the need for maintenance and repair of equipment. This requires a comprehensive change in the approach to purchasing management and maintenance. You need to know the elements of key importance for the functioning of the company and properly categorize all parts present in the warehouse. Having access to optimally classified data, creating a production management plan is very simple. So far, expenditure on the MRO market has not been a key element in the strategic plans of many companies. Extended delivery times for new parts and difficult access to many of them force a change of approach. It is worth protecting yourself in case of problems with the order and planning alternative sources of procurement.

Control in enterprise management: how to keep data under control?

There is only one answer to the question: how to control the data flow in the company? Optimum control is possible thanks to a proven management system. Only thanks to the implementation of professional solutions, the company is able to control the flow of information, properly classify it and combine data in such a way as to generate real savings. Real-time updates not only help to monitor current consumption, but also provide a strong support in the spending planning process.

Predictive Maintenance – does it pay off?

According to Market Research Future, the global Predictive Maintenance (PdM) market will reach $ 6.3 billion in 2022. Over the next 2 years, as much as 83% of all manufacturing companies will actively use Predictive Maintenance. Why is PdM growing so dynamically? Does it pay off at all? Let’s check it out!

What is Predictive Maintenance (PdM)?

The basic assumption of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is to monitor the health and performance of enterprise resources in real time in order to predict when the resources will require maintenance. All for the sake of optimal use of the equipment and reduction of uncontrolled downtime caused by failures of production lines. Parts are maintained or replaced exactly when they need it. Correct application of the Predictive Maintenance strategy allows to reduce repair costs, which in the long run generates huge savings.

What are the goals of PDM?

All activities related to Predictive Maintenance are performed mainly with the use of technological means: dedicated systems or IT solutions. Their goal is to increase efficiency and ensure increased productivity. It is also important to reduce the maintenance costs of machines and ensure their uninterrupted readiness to work. The development of technology has made it possible to create advanced algorithms that help collect and comprehensively analyze data. Thanks to this, it has become possible to significantly improve the process of predicting when to carry out maintenance or repair, and to what exactly these parts should be applied. Predictive Maintenance allows you to reduce the number of previously used maintenance, because it allows you to perform them exactly when it is necessary.

Another primary goal of Predictive Maintenance is to significantly reduce the number of unexpected failures. Traditional maintenance methods are based on regular standard repair procedures. Full control over the actual state of wear of production line elements allows you to predict many failures and counter them early enough. Predictive Maintenance can be described as more advanced maintenance. It allows you to detect possible faults faster and repair them before a serious problem occurs.

Opsenio: oprogramowanie dedykowane

Differences between Predictive Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance

Maintenance is traditional preventive maintenance. While the goals of both strategies are the same: failure prevention, their mechanisms differ significantly. Preventive maintenance is performed on a regular basis (e.g. monthly, annually) or based on wear on parts (after a certain number of cycles). There is always a predetermined schedule here, which in practice may lead to too many service activities on a given element, even if its technical condition does not require it at the moment. Predictive maintenance requires more advanced steps to perform much more precise service activities. Predictive Maintenance uses technology to assess when certain equipment requires maintenance.

PDM – technology in the service of business

Predictive Maintenance activities are based on the analysis of data collected thanks to advanced technologies. The basic element are machines monitoring the condition of machines, equipped with sensors that collect information about temperature, vibration, noise level, pressure, etc. It is possible to convert this information into digital signals that can be measured and analyzed at a specific time. All this to predict when a service technician’s intervention is required.

Machine Learning uses data generated by sensors to understand the normal behavior of a given piece of equipment. After some time, this system has enough data to detect any anomalies in the machine’s operation. For machine learning to bring real benefits, it must be based on high-quality data. On this basis, it is possible to predict when the equipment should be serviced.

Opsenio: oprogramowanie dedykowane

Predictive Maintenance – custom software

The key to Predictive Maintenance is a system that is comprised of devices for monitoring, learning and maintenance management. Only an advanced combination of these elements allows you to gather reliable information. If the company already has certain mechanisms to obtain data on the technical condition of parts, it is worth optimizing the process of their analysis. In practice, proper grouping of data and clear and transparent messages that should reach employees in real time become a big challenge. These are the possibilities that dedicated software opens up for itself. A system tailored to the needs and capabilities of a specific company is a mechanism that allows you to generate real savings.

The decision to apply the assumptions of Predictive Maintenance can bring real benefits:

  • better management of funds – expenses incurred only for the necessary maintenance and repair work
  • fewer failures – most of them can be prevented by replacing defective or worn parts early
  • maximizing the life of the equipment – minor repairs can significantly extend the time of effective operation of machines
  • higher revenues – although the implementation of Predictive Maintenance generates costs at the implementation stage, in the long run it brings real savings by protecting valuable production equipment and reducing costs related to unplanned downtime of the line.
